Is It Time To Quit Your Job? Maybe Not.

The latest from Jonathan Raymond—author, founder, surfer, girl-dad.

Hey,

You’ve asked yourself that question more than once in your career.

You get frustrated by the work, your boss, the pay—or all of the above—and you start poking around on LinkedIn to see what’s out there. And the moment the algorithm figures out what you’re doing the postings start finding you (not to mention the recruiters depending on your level). But if it were just about leaving a job you hate, it would be an easy decision. Most of the time, it’s not. It’s about whether to leave a job you kind of hate but also kind of like and want to keep, what do you do then?

It’s a moment that to me is the most under-discussed and under-utilized in ALL of personal growth as an adult. Because if you’ve got an abusive boss or are being harassed, you have to leave. And if you’re happy with your job, you like the team, your manager is alright and the pay is good, well, there probably isn’t a critical mass enough to make a change. The power of this moment is for all of us who find ourselves somewhere in the giant middle of that bell curve.

How do you MAXIMIZE the time you have left in this job, whether that’s a week or a year. And that comes down to doing something radical: which is to take 100% accountability to learn something new about yourself. And I can tell you from personal experience, that if you’re frustrated in your job right now two things are true:

  • If you walk away before you’re already, you will be walking away from a life-changing insight about yourself that will take years to resurface.

  • The thing you have the opportunity to learn about yourself is yours and yours alone. It has nothing to do with your manager, the company or the CEO, the people you work with, or the pay. All of those things, as frustrating as they may be, are distractions from the inner work.

In this week’s episode of Good Authority, we did something new. It’s part of a shift to offering you more structured content, how to implement the Good Authority principles in your life. This week, you’ll learn a simple process for how to evaluate your current situation, figure out what you want to learn before you quit, and follow a set of emotional benchmarks to make sure you get it right.

If you have fantasies of walking into your boss’ office (or Zoom meeting) and letting them have it, I hear you. I’ve been there many times. As good as that feels in your mind, it’s not the way.

Jonathan

P.S., may sound a bit morbid but this is truly one of my favorite topics. I quit so many jobs the wrong way until I quit one the right way. It changed my life forever, led to the writing of Good Authority and creating the two businesses I run today. If you need help with this process, please watch the video first and then reply and I’ll give you whatever advice I can.
