Getting involved with AI isn’t an option anymore.
The latest from Jonathan Raymond—author, founder, surfer, girl-dad.
Hey,
48% of people in the US still haven’t heard of ChatGPT. Let that sink in. AI is transforming our world at breakneck speed, yet nearly half of us are still in the dark.
We've all seen the mixed bag that past tech revolutions have brought. Social media and smartphones? Sure, they connect us, but they've also fueled division and harmed our kids' mental health. Now, AI is here, and it's up to us – those with strong values – to steer this ship in the right direction.
If we don't get involved, we'll leave AI in the hands of the usual tech giants reporting to their investors that the increased number of hours per day users are glued to their phones is a success metric. AI isn't just another gadget; it's a game-changer for communication and understanding. That's why I'm so passionate about it. I see AI as a tool to revolutionize leadership and management, allowing us to connect and coach on a massive scale, something I've been dreaming of for years.
You don't need to be a tech guru to make a difference. The real challenge isn't the tech itself but how we apply it ethically, how we use it, and how we talk about it. We need diverse, thoughtful voices in the AI conversation to ensure it benefits everyone. Just like we should have had thoughtful voices around social media, screen time, sedentary lifestyles … you name it. But, this time, it’s different. This time, we’re up against a technology we might be unable to keep up with.
I discussed all these things and more on Good Authority this week. I think you’ll find something there worth reflecting on.
So, this weekend, I have a call to action for you… experiment with an AI of your choice. It could be ChatGPT, Gemini, CoPilot, Ren, you name it. But, play like you would as a kid, with something that intrigues you, tests you, challenges you… and think about what its limits should be. As many parents will know, a kid learns a good lesson by holding their finger above a candle to understand its heat… something well learned before getting the chance to burn the house down.
