Founding, Failing, & Finding Balance
The latest from Jonathan Raymond—author, founder, surfer, girl-dad.
Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to truly embrace both success and vulnerability? To build something meaningful, while also being real about the struggles, the mistakes, and the personal growth along the way?
In my latest episode, I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with someone who embodies this journey perfectly: Rand Fishkin. You might know Rand as the founder of Moz, or maybe from his latest venture, Sparktoro. But what you probably don’t know is the raw, unfiltered story behind his rise—how he dealt with the pressures of venture capital, why stepping back from his role as CEO became a necessary step for his mental health, and how he’s using those hard-earned lessons to lead in a more thoughtful and empathetic way today.
We dive deep into the moments that don’t make the headlines—the burnout, the depression, and the realization that success isn't about pushing through at all costs. Rand opens up about how his childhood shaped his leadership style, and what it truly means to balance personal healing with professional ambition.
This conversation isn’t just for entrepreneurs or business leaders. It’s for anyone who’s ever questioned the path they’re on, anyone who's felt the weight of societal expectations, or anyone who wants to lead a more authentic and fulfilling life. Rand’s honesty about his own imperfections and the lessons he’s learned along the way is something I think we all need to hear right now.
On a personal note — this is my favorite episode so far. This isn’t to insult my previous guests, but the combination of how Rand showed up, and my own willingness to go to some new places led to the type of raw, human conversation I dreamed about when I first had the idea to launch this podcast.
In the spirit of trying new things, here’s a bonus audio reflection on the conversation I had with Rand while I was out on a walk the other day. This exclusive audio is only available to newsletter subscribers. If you know someone who needs to here this — just forward this email to them.

P.S. My publisher just reminded me that Good Authority is approaching it’s 10th anniversary (!). Sometimes I wonder whether the book still feels current—especially given the seismic changes in our world—but a recent rave review on LinkedIn settled me down. Even so, I’m exploring ways to include some of these topics like Artificial Intelligence and remote work whether in a new edition, an e-book companion, or maybe just more videos on YouTube. What do you think? Let me know by replying here, here, or here. 😉
